Sugarland Is 'Still' a Voice for Women

“The familiar meets the foreign” on Sugarland’s first new album in more than seven years.

The country music duo sits down for a new interview with Rolling Stone to discuss how their comeback project really is “Still the Same,” as their new single suggests, and how it will be different.

The band first spoke on gender equality on their 2007 smash single “Stay,” and they plan to continue to be a voice for women on their new album.

“It’s been everywhere in our writing,” lead singer Jennifer Nettles says. “I think we’re all learning the language of pain right now. For so long we've been kept quiet, and now we are hearing it very loudly…. As a woman I think it's important, and as an artist I take that part seriously.”

Championing women is among the topics Kristian Bush finds "important" to address on the band's next project.

“I think the opportunity to speak some of the things we’re going to speak on this record is important,” Kristian says.
