Watch As 300-Pound Bear Manages To Squeeze Through Tiny Kitchen Window

A couple in South Lake Tahoe are no strangers to bear encounters, but the last one left them shocked. Lane Sykes and Carole Scofield had left their home for a few hours with some friends and could not believe what was waiting for them when they returned home - a seven-foot tall, 300-pound black bear rummaging for food in their kitchen.

When one of their friends said there was a bear in the kitchen, Scofield thought he was joking. "I thought she was kidding,” Scofield said, but she noticed her friend looked “frightened and very scared.”

The couple told KOLO8 that their doors were secure and they never thought a bear could fit through the sliding window in their kitchen. "The doors were locked. We left the back window open, which is a small window; I have never thought a bear could get in that window,” Skyes explained.

The couple's home surveillance camera captured the moment the bear climbed through the window to look for some food. Once inside, the bear stood on the kitchen counter for a few moments before climbing back out and sniffing around the backyard. The animal made multiple trips in and out of the house through the window while helping itself to the food in the kitchen.

The couple believes that the same bear broke down their front door last year in a search for food. The pair said that they have had six encounters with bears during their 20 years living in South Lake Tahoe. They added that they consider themselves very lucky because the bear did not injure anybody.

"We are very lucky. Both major break-ins, we were very lucky. I know a lot of people have not been. It has been very, very costly," Scofield said.
