Tim McGraw is a seasoned singer-songwriter, with decades of hit songs that fans know and love. Some songs are particularly heartfelt, and McGraw is reflecting on one that he wrote with two others as a tribute to service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
McGraw worked with Brett and Brad Warren years ago to write âIf Youâre Reading this.â He reflected on the moment he knew it was a special song, in a statement shared by his record label ahead of Memorial Day weekend. He remembered:
âBrett and Brad Warren and myself wrote that song. I remember I was on an airplane, and I think it was a Time magazine article â and it was early on during the Iraqi war â and there was a story called âIf Youâre Reading This.â And it was about soldiers writing letters and puttinâ âem in their pockets in case something was to happen. Iâd read a few of the letters that they had written home of soldiers who had gotten killed in action. And when I got home, I called Brett and Brad and they came over, and we sat in the living room and spent a day and wrote that song. And it impacted us when we finished writinâ it, but youâre so close to it when you write it. So, our nanny at the time, Jojo, was at the house, and we asked her to come in. We said, âWill you come in and listen to this song and see if itâs as good as we think it is?â And then she just started crying when she heard it, so we felt like that we really had something special.â
