Algae Washing Onto FL Beaches Could Contain Flesh-Eating Bacteria

All that algae floating up onto our beaches may contain flesh-eating bacteria.

A study from Florida Atlantic University says the Vibrio bacteria sticks to micro plastics mixed in with the sargassum creating the perfect pathogen storm.

Broward Health’s chief medical officer Dr. Joshua Lenchus says Vibrio has been linked to food borne illnesses.

Lenchus says anyone with an open wound or recent tattoos or piercings should avoid going in the water if sargassum is present as symptoms can become more severe or even life-threatening.
