A key figure in the history of the city of Miami Gardens has passed away.
Former Mayor Shirley Gibson died recently at the age of 79. She led the push for Miami Gardens to become a city. Gibson was the city's first mayor in 2003, and she served until 2012. Current Mayor Rodney Harris calls Gibson one of the true pioneers of the city.
Miami flags will fly at half-staff today in her honor.
