(Miami, FL) - A Florida man convicted of beating to death a University of Miami linebacker and the killer's ex-girlfriend almost 30 years ago might be heading back to death row.
Deshawn Dennis was convicted of the first-degree murders of Marlin Barnes and Timwanika Lumpkins and was sentenced to death.
However, 2016 it was overturned when the U.S. Supreme Court found Florida’s death-penalty sentencing system unconstitutional.
A new law went into effect in 2023 that allows juries to recommend a death sentence with an 8-4 vote instead of unanimously.
Dennis is now 52 and will be back in court Monday in Miami to determine his fate.
He is one of six former inmates from Miami-Dade sentenced to death who are still in legal limbo.
Dennis was initially sentenced to death on Feb. 26, 1999, and was granted a resentencing in 2017.
