Florida Atlantic University suddenly severed its 30-year contract with Broward Health after only 2 years. FAU's CEO cited untenable financial terms.
On Thursday, Broward Health spokeswoman Jennifer Smith said Broward Health did not want to end the relationship.
“Broward Health received notice this morning that FAU intended to sever the contract. Broward Health has no intention of walking away from this agreement; we are simply looking for FAU to be an equal partner and live up to their contractual obligations to support clinical operations, which they have failed to do thus far,” she said.
Now 200 medical and nursing students will no longer receive clinical education at the 11 hospitals under the umbrella of the Broward Health and Memorial Healthcare System. Both public health districts are now under the same CEO, Shane Strum.
In a message from Strum to Hasner at FAU: “Should FAU wish to collaborate and continue its discussions; Broward Health stands ready to bring academic medicine to Broward County in partnership with FAU.”
Therefore, FAU students are scrambling to land hands-on training at other local hospitals in competition with students from other state medical schools.
All FAU students were told by Broward health system yesterday not to return.
