Floridians now have a new sunscreen option for the first time in more than 25 years.
This is after the FDA approved the active ingredient Bemotrizinol, known as B.E.M.T. to sunscreen products in June.
Dermatologists say it is ultra-sheer but still guards against both major types of ultraviolet radiation without the chalky residue of common sunscreen products, including zinc oxide.
UV rays from direct sunlight exposure can damage skin cells, causing sunburn as well as DNA mutations that lead to skin cancers.
Bemotrizinol offers broad-spectrum sunscreen protection. This means it’s effective at blocking both types of UV light.
Europeans have been using B.E.M.T products for years.
The first products containing it are hitting store shelves, and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. says approving its use would "increase competition and consumer confidence in sunscreen products."
