Dolly Parton + Hank Williams Jr. Inspire Lainey Wilson

As they say so often in Nashville, "It all begins with a song." And so goes the story of newcomer Lainey Wilson, who recently talked to Cody Alan about getting her start in country music. The 28-year-old Louisiana native has certainly hit the ground running.

"I wrote my first song when I was nine," Lainey says, a blast of creativity she attributes to an early visit to the Grand Ole Opry. "It was really one of those things that kind of latched on to me and would not let go – I just had to do it! My mom thought it was going to be a one-time thing and that'd be it, but every week I just kept bringing her another one."

The fiery newcomer is no stranger to Nashville, having called Music City home for 10 years now. "Even before I moved here I'd have considered myself a songwriter before an artist," Lainey says. In fact, she wrote or co-wrote all 12 tracks on her album ‘Sayin' What I'm Thinkin'. The project is available now.

Honesty and authenticity are common themes, qualities shared with Wilson's biggest influences.

Of Dolly Parton, "She's my girl," Lainey declares. She loves Lee Ann Womack, too, in part "because she sounds a lot like Dolly!" Still other stars, genres and eras have left their mark on the up-and-coming songstress. "I grew up listening to a lot of '90s country" Lainey explains. "If I was riding the tractor with my daddy, we were listening to Hank Williams Jr., and we were dancing to Bob Seger in the kitchen. It was a little bit of everything."
