Cuban Salsa Queen Celia Cruz Honored By U.S. Mint

The Celia Cruz Quarter is coming in 2024. The U.S. Mint says Miami's Cuban Queen of Salsa will be the first Afro Latina to be featured on a U.S. coin. On the reverse side of the quarter Ceila's wearing a rumba-style dress with her signature slogan “¡AZÚCAR!” inscribed along with her name.

It'll be the 14th coin in the American Women Quarters Program. “Celia Cruz was a Cuban-American singer, cultural icon, and one of the most popular #Latin artists of the 20th century,” the Mint tweeted.

Cruz will join other historic female leaders to be featured on the currency in 2024, including Patsy Takemoto Mink, the first woman of color to serve in Congress; Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, a Civil War surgeon and suffragist; Pauli Murray, a civil rights activist and lawyer; and Zitkala-Ša, a voting rights activist from the Yankton Sioux Nation.
