FLORIDA - Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former Maryland Representative David Trone are co-chairing a bipartisan effort to establish term limits in Congress.

The initiative is led by U.S. Term Limits, a nonprofit organization focused on securing enough state support to call a constitutional convention under Article V of the U.S. Constitution.

A convention would propose a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on members of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

In a joint op-ed, DeSantis and Trone criticized the current Congress for prioritizing reelection over legislative action, stating that Congress has become more focused on maintaining power than serving the public.

They emphasized that the structure of the current legislative body does not reflect the original intentions of the Founders.

Currently, 19 states have passed resolutions supporting a convention to propose term limits, including Florida.

The U.S. Term Limits campaign encourages candidates to sign a pledge backing a three-term limit for House members and a two-term limit for Senators.

This would equate to a six-year limit for Representatives and a 12-year limit for Senators.

The campaign is aiming to reach 34 states in order to officially convene a constitutional convention.

If the amendment is proposed, it would then need ratification by three-fourths of the states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.

Proponents argue that these term limits would encourage new perspectives in Congress and increase accountability among lawmakers.

The initiative highlights ongoing discussions about congressional reform and the influence of long-term incumbency in U.S. politics, with efforts continuing to gain support across multiple states.
